Saving the Bees at School

todayDecember 22, 2019 23

Background

“Working hard like a bee” is a phrase we all know and/or use, but besides knowing that bees are hardworking, do we know what do they do? They are workers with a big responsibility! 1/3 of all our crop depends on bees because they help grow fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Sadly, they are mysteriously dying and bees have become extinct species in many countries. Happily, many schools around the world are trying to make a difference! Beekeeping clubs are starting to rise and “take over” their school’s rooftops. The students help honey bees build there their hives and thrive like they deserve to. During the lunch break, you can find the enthusiastic beekeepers taking care of the bees: refreshing their water, making sure they have enough space and just enjoying watching them work. Some schools get to the amazing number of 100,000 bees on their roof!

Most of the kids say they were scared of being stung by the bees at first. After wearing the protection clothes and getting to be familiar with the bees, all of the students felt comfortable around them. “Basically, you don’t mess with them and they don’t mess with you,” says one of the teen beekeepers.

Besides concurring their fears, the students learn about the importance of the bees in our world, gain beekeeping experience and have fun while doing it all.

If you also want to help save the bees, start your own beekeeping club at your school! If you’re not a “bee-person” and just want to do something nice for your four-legged friend, check out Vegan Homemade Treats for your Pets!
