Can teaching be a cool career?! There are teachers out there who show us it’s possible; some teachers take it further than a classroom and teach outdoors! It’s called “Adventure Educator” and you can actually learn to be one.
Oz, a rock climber and adventure educator, says that the main aims of the work are acquiring outdoor skills, challenging adventures and personal growth, outdoors of course. This work is also a great way for him to pass on the important ecological and humanistic values he believes in.
Some examples of courses adventure educators take (depending on where they study) are ‘Rock Climbing Fundamentals’, ‘Wilderness Expedition’ and ‘Whitewater Kayaking’. After they qualify, the adventure educators work in national parks, city youth centers and various adventure programs.
Oz says: “Every moment is amazing! I spend my time with extraordinary people. I get the chance to combine the things I love: education, nature and outdoors. I learn a lot about them and about the unique connection they have”.
